Night Guards Q & A

What is a night guard?

A night guard is sometimes called a mouth guard or bite splint. They consist of hard or soft plastic that covers your top or bottom set of teeth. The appliance cushions your teeth when you clench and prevents the teeth from grinding together.

The night guards offered at Doral Dental Boutique & Spa are customized to you, so you have a comfortable fit and effective protection against teeth grinding.

This means less wear-and-tear, headaches, and gum inflammation.

Why would I need a night guard?

You may have a tendency to clench or grind your teeth while you’re asleep and not even know it. Indications that you do have these habits include:

  • Morning headache
  • Sore jaw
  • Chipped or loose teeth
  • Abnormal wear on your back teeth

Dr. Estefan or one of the experienced hygienists at Doral Dental Boutique & Spa may also

notice the signs of bruxism (teeth grinding) on your back teeth. A night guard reduces friction and damage to your teeth.

What are the benefits of getting a night guard from a dentist?

Over-the-counter night guards are available, but these are made from lesser quality materials and are not customized for your mouth.

The customized night guards provided by Doral Dental Boutique & Spa are made from only the highest quality materials and are individualized to your bite. Dr. Estefan takes an impression of your teeth and sends it to a dental laboratory to fabricate your appliance. When the guard is ready, you come into the office to make sure the fit is just right.

How do I care for a night guard?

As the name suggests, you wear a night guard while you sleep at night. Put it in just before you sleep and remove it as soon as you wake up. Expect a transition of 4-6 weeks before you feel fully comfortable wearing the appliance.

Before each use, thoroughly rinse your night guard with cool water. You can also brush it with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Rinse it after use as well.

Never leave your night guard in a sunny or hot area. Avoid washing it in hot water, which could cause it to warp and negatively affect its fit.

Always store the night guard in the container provided. If you find that the night guard becomes loose or uncomfortable, consult with Dr. Estefan. You might be in need of a replacement.
